The Facebook-owned messenger service, WhatsApp announced on 6 February how it is stopping abusive and fake accounts. The move was discussed in a press conference held in New Delhi.

 Preceding the upcoming major elections in India, WhatsApp had to take some measures to avoid controversy. India has a huge user base in India, being the largest online messaging platform. The company is employing machine learning to determine which account may be causing trouble and once found to remove them. Although there is some human intervention so it’s kind of like a hybrid system. According to a statement by officials, WhatsApp has been removing up to 2M accounts per month, with 20% of these being banned at the time they’re created.
“As with any communications platform, sometimes people attempt to exploit our service. Some may want to distribute click-bait links designed to capture personal information, while others want to promote an idea. Regardless of the intent, automated and bulk messaging violates our terms of service, and one of our priorities is to prevent and stop this kind of abuse,” the company said.


WhatsApp has upwards of 1.5 billion users. Its popularity is its biggest flaw. Several incidents have led to mob lynching incidents due to fake news, especially in India. Moreover, the issue of the platform being used as a political tool is also not new. For instance, in the 2018 general elections in Brazil, a software was used to grab citizen’s phone numbers from Facebook and then sent messages on Whatsapp to sway their views. That is probably the reason why WhatsApp is actively taking bolder measures before the upcoming elections in India.

 Earlier, the platform had limited the number of forwarding to five, per message and forwarded messages are tagged as such. This was a reduction from the previous limit of 20. However, that five can include groups containing hundreds of contacts.

 The thing with machine learning is that it keeps on getting better with time and use. If 20% of accounts are banned automatically, in future that may only increase. But there is no need to worry about having your own account getting banned, as long as the following conditions don’t apply or exceed nominal values:

 Whether the IP address and phone number point to the same country
How many messages an account sends
How soon after registration high-volume messaging begins
Aside from all these measures, the company is also running a media campaign to ask users to “spread joy, not rumours”. There is even a street theatre program warning people not to believe everything.

The Finance Minister of Pakistan, Asad Umar, has confirmed that the government has not stopped PayPal from entering into the Pakistani market.

 While addressing the ceremony at Chamber of Commerce, the finance minister, Asad Umar shot down the rumors and revealed that actually, they have been after PayPal for some time now.
“What you’ve been told about PayPal is completely wrong,” said the minister in response to a question. 
He added, 
“PayPal is neither stuck at my desk, nor the State Bank, nor any other government institution. The situation is actually reverse. We are [actually] chasing PayPal. I took this even though this issue is not directly related to me.”


The Finance Minister claimed that he is well aware that PayPal presents a great opportunity for Pakistan and it is an excellent source of income for local youngsters who work from home.
 “They face immense difficulties without PayPal or any effective online payment system,” said Asad Umar.
While it wasn’t his job, he said that he took it upon himself to ensure PayPal’s arrival. 
“This is why I took the initiative myself and had a message sent to the PayPal chief executive officer and told him that, ‘This is such an important issue, if you want, I can fly to the US myself and meet you’. We have made contact with them and initiated a dialogue with them.”
Lastly, Asad Umar talked about AliPay which is a part of Alibaba, whose subsidiary is Ant Financial. This Ant Financial has acquired the majority shares of Telenor Bank which should be helpful in improving the digital banking market in Pakistan.

 Ever since its inception, WhatsApp has been one of the most popular and successful messaging apps in the smartphone era. With competitors like iMessage, Facebook Messenger, and Android Messages, WhatsApp has seen immense success in both ecosystems, iOS, and Android. Some may argue that the messaging app has enjoyed a lot more success in the Android ecosystem due to the simple features of the native messaging app.

A recent WhatsApp update in the iOS brought the highly-awaited Apple’s Face ID authentication. XDA developers revealed that the face unlock feature is also coming to the Android version of WhatsApp. As of now, people have been using third-party passcode option on WhatsApp, however, latest news confirms that the messaging app will be incorporating the highly-awaited feature as a native lock option for the users which will decrease the risk of potential security concerns.

2. WhatsApp Dark mode

“Dark mode everything” has been the most requested feature by smartphone users in 2018 because of various reasons. Well, it seems that WhatsApp has listened to its users, according to several leaks the messaging mobile application may bring the ‘dark mode’ feature as part of its upcoming updates. As of now, the users can only change the wallpaper background for their chats that exists as the only minimal means of customization.

3. WhatsApp voice messages

This feature will be particularly useful to those who like to communicate via WhatsApp’s messages. Previously, the user had to tap on every single voice message sent in order to listen to the content of the voice message. However, with the upcoming update in 2019, WhatsApp will now automatically start playing the next voice message after the selected one is finished.

4. WhatsAppp 3D check

This will be an iPhone exclusive feature for obvious reasons, the feature will allow iOS users to reply privately in group chats via a one-on-one chat. Along with this feature, it also provides iOS users with a 3D touch function to check the WhatsApp statuses without sending a read-receipt message to the person whose story the users was looking at.

5. Sticker search and Sticker integration

The emoji-search feature which was brought last year introduced a new level of ease for the emoji-lovers. The messaging app is now replicating the same thing with its ‘Stickers’. The new update will let users search the kind of sticker via text they are looking for and will subsequently provide the available options. Furthermore, the app is also testing an update for stickers with third-party keyboard integration to provide more options for stickers for the user. The first keyboard app that will use the Stickers Integration feature will be GBoard.

 Uber might bring its flying cars project to Pakistan sooner than we’ve all been thinking.

 The US-based ride-sharing company announced this Monday, that it sees Pakistan as one big market for flying cars. This interest might bring some good news to Pakistan as the company nears the launch of Uber Elevate, a project that wants to innovate the way we travel within cities.
Uber Elevate is a program being pioneered by Uber to make air transport within urban spaces a possibility. The program, hence, is focusing on using vehicles that come with vertical landing and taking-off capability.

 A blog post recently published by the company mentioned that a perfect Uber Elevate city would be one which has been facing traffic congestion for a lot of time. The city must have ‘aspirational vision’ towards the concept of aerial transport and should also be looking forward to setting up this solution.

While talking to The Express Tribune, the General Manager for the Middle East and African Region at Uber, Anthony Le Roux, told that the Pakistani market was a good fit for Uber’s flying cars and that “we can see flying cars much sooner in Pakistan than the complicated driverless cars”.
Explaining as to why Uber had such a vision, Le Roux mentioned that Pakistan has very rapidly accepted the concept of ride-sharing services and its products, surprising the company itself.
Uber, last year, announced Dallas and Los Angeles as its prospective markets for Uber Elevate. The company was now on a look-out for a third city for this project. Uber Elevate would start testing flights in these cities starting 2020, moving on to the commercial operation in 2023. Once successful, the company would move on to the list of possible countries where this project would be launched. Pakistan is one of the countries present on that list.
