Here's how to access a master list of keyboard shortcuts for YouTube, Reddit, Spotify, Twitch, and more.

It’s easy to find keyboard shortcuts when using an app on your Mac or PC. When you look at a function in a menu, you often see its corresponding keyboard shortcut, which you can then use to speed things up. Websites, on the other hand, often don’t show these shortcuts to you, even though they’re very much present, forcing us to stumble upon them when we accidentally press a key. As it turns out, many websites do have a master list of keyboard shortcuts, they just hide them behind a specific keyboard shortcut.

So, what’s this secret shortcut that unlocks all hidden keyboard shortcuts? Shift + /. Or, of course, ?.

YouTube has a long list of hidden keyboard shortcuts

This button combo is your ticket to see the hidden list of keyboard shortcuts for your favorite websites. I first stumbled upon it while browsing YouTube: Somehow, I accidentally hit Shift + /, and, all of a sudden, I was presented with this complete collection of keyboard shortcuts for the site. Many of these shortcuts I already knew, as you might already know: K plays and pauses a video, J and L rewinds and fast forwards, respectively. However, other shortcuts might come as a surprise: You can rewind and fast forward frame-by-frame using, and. while paused. You can also slow down or speed up playback speed using < and > (Shift +,) and (Shift + .).

It’s worth scanning the full list to see if any of these keyboards

Many websites hide their keyboard shortcuts from users, too

It’s not just YouTube: Other popular websites you use every day hide keyboard shortcuts behind Shift + /. Twitter, for example, taught me that g + m launches DMs, while u and x can mute and block an account, respectively. Facebook also has a list of keyboard shortcuts: You might know that L likes a post, but did you know you can use / to search Facebook, or that you can pin keyboard shortcuts to the bottom right corner of the window that change depending on what you’re doing? That’s the most helpful option I’ve seen so far.

Other websites I’ve found that have these lists of keyboard shortcuts tucked away are Reddit, the Spotify web app, the WhatsApp web app, and Twitch. I’d love to know just how many websites include these hidden keyboard shortcuts as an option, but it’s difficult to find any information on the subject. Until then, the best thing to do is to experiment on the websites you frequent. It doesn’t seem to matter which browser you use (the shortcut works for me in both Chrome and Safari).

In a recent change to its advertisement approach, Google is now letting YouTube show more advertisements to its users.

Google has changed the way it was using its search-based data for advertisements on YouTube. In a change of its approach towards the video media platform, Google has now started to treat YouTube as one of its extensions instead of an entirely different platform. New advertising possibilities and tools are being added to this platform for brands.

The company announced this Monday that it was going to introduce a new section harboring different ‘Sponsorship Opportunities’. This section would contain advertisements which would be more relevant to your searches and/or reportedly even location. If an individual is watching a game-play of some video game, YouTube would now most likely show him/her a link too, from where that game could be downloaded.
“What we’re announcing at Advertising Week is really a doubling down, really a solution to make a video more actionable and to allow advertisers to measure success,” Tara Walpert Levy, Google’s VP Agency and Brand Solutions, told CNBC in an interview.
Google also added support for a third-party market research company IRI to provide advertisement related analytics to the companies which are running these advertisements for better targeted-marketing.

You can go to YouTube to learn something, have a laugh, listen to music, and watch some of the content you enjoyed years ago. But as many have learned thanks to recent controversy, YouTube also has content that isn't appropriate for children.

YouTube Dangers

Logan Paul, a popular YouTube user with more than 15 million subscribers to his channel, is in some hot water after posting a video to YouTube that appeared to show a body hanging from a tree. Logan was in a Japanese forest known for its high rate of suicides.

Paul went on to apologize multiple times for the video upload and YouTube ultimately removed it from its site. But before it was taken down, other people copied it and it was still accessible.

His actions come amid a string of complaints against the service for allegedly failing to safeguard children. In November, YouTube removed more than 150,000 videos from its site and turned off comments on more than 625,000 videos after investigators discovered they were targeting children. And in some cases, the comments were filled with alleged child predators.

YouTube also confirmed at the time that it had removed ads from about 2 million videos that featured content inappropriate for children.

Not surprisingly, those findings and others have caused parents to question whether their children should even be allowed to access YouTube in its current form.

What You Should Do

If you ultimately decide you want your kids to access YouTube but would like to limit what your kids can watch, your first step should be to turn on the site's Restricted Mode, which can effectively be used as parental controls. But before you leave Junior in front of YouTube, thinking that Restricted Mode will do all the work for you, remember that it's not an exact science and relies in part on users flagging content that might be inappropriate for children, and moderators taking said content down.
So make sure to talk with your kids about what they shouldn't watch, as this might not fully protect your children from adult content. Here's how to set YouTube parental controls.

Browser-Based Parental Controls

1. Go to YouTube.com, click Sign In and log into your Google account. When complete, you should be brought back to the homepage.

2. Click on your Profile icon in the top right corner.

3. Click Restricted Mode in the menu.

4. Turn On Restricted Mode.

5. Close the window. YouTube looks like it refreshes after that last step, but you'll still see the same content as you did before you enabled Restricted Mode.

6. Re-open YouTube, and confirm you've enabled restricted mode by clicking your profile icon and looking for that setting to be labelled as On.

A Different Process for Mobile

Since many YouTube users also check out video content on mobile devices like the iPhone and Android smartphones, you should know that changing your setting in the browser will not affect your account anywhere else. In fact, you'll need to turn on Restricted Mode on any machine you want to filter adult content on.
Here's a look at how to do it on the YouTube mobile app:
1. Open your YouTube app and sign in.

2. Tap your profile icon to go into your Account. You'll see it at the top-right of your screen. It'll be your YouTube account's icon.

3. Choose Settings. Here you'll see a bunch of options to modify your YouTube experience. But for our purposes, we want Settings.

4. Tap Restricted Mode Filtering. There's the setting we want. Once you tap on that, you'll be brought to a simple page to set your filter.

5. Hit the close button to confirm the setting.

6. Pull down on the list of videos to refresh the feed.

You're now viewing content filtered through Restricted Mode!
